Hunter wanted to tap his foot. To find a way to make Nick and his algorithm work faster. Something, anything, that would give them the lead they so desperately needed.
âOkay.â Nick leaned back and ran his hands through his hair. âGot a couple of emails here between Fletch and Roper. One from Roper asking if he could come over to the lab. Seemed he had a proposition for Fletch.â
âDid Fletch agree to let him visit?â Maya slid her chair closer to Nick and looked up at his screen.
âNo, but thereâs a follow-up email saying that Roper went anyway, and Carson let him in.â
âWhen was this?â Hunter asked.
âFour months ago, which was after Fletch was awarded the research grant.â
Maya paused as if pondering the news. âRudy might know enough about grants to be able to fake the paperwork.â
Hunter nodded. âStill, weâre just speculating again.â
âWe can still get eyes on him, though.â Piper perked up. âIâll do it. Iâd be glad for a break from these files, even if it is sitting in a car.â
âI can come with you.â Nick grinned at her.
Hunter looked at Nick. âYou were going to go to the island, right? And I was hoping youâd do a deep dive on Roper, including his financial situation.â
âYeah, sure.â Nick looked disappointed at not getting to go on the stakeout but rested his hands over his keyboard.
âSince we have unknown prints from the lab, we need to figure out how to recover Roperâs prints without him knowing it,â Piper suggested. âThat could rule him out or give us leverage when interviewing him.â
âMaybe you could get something when you surveil him,â Hunter suggested.
Piperâs phone dinged, and she pumped her fist up. âYes! Finally. We have the subpoena for Peggy.â
âPrint it, and Iâll go serve it.â Hunter looked at Maya. âI figure the subpoena is going to make her mad, so you should come with me since she seemed to be more amenable to talking to you.â
âGlad to go,â Maya said enthusiastically.
He grabbed the subpoena from the printer and opened the door for Maya.
In the car, she looked at him. âHow can it take so long to get warrants and subpoenas?â
He merged into traffic. âThatâs a long discussion, but often it has to do with having enough probable cause. Then finding an available judge and impressing a sense of urgency on their clerk so they can get it before the judge. And on and on.â
She shook her head. âI appreciate our legal system, but sometimes it overcomplicates things. Especially when it comes to acting quickly at times like this.â
He nodded and turned his attention to the drive under drizzly skies. He found a space right in front of the business and looked at Maya as he pulled the key from the ignition. âReady to do this?â
âAm I ever.â She opened her door and slid out, meeting him at the front door.
He pulled it open, releasing that same lavender smell heâd noticed on their last visit. Peggy was behind the counter again, today wearing a flowery blouse and long skirt.
